EducationI am a Junior Theology Major at Southern Adventist University.
ExperienceI have tutored close to 30 students total, several of whom had learning disabilities. With one of them, I recognized that she had some type of learning disability that was making mathematics difficult for her. I brought this to the attention of her parents who told me that she did have a touch of Attention Deficit Disorder, but it wasn't major. However, they began investigating further, and we eventually decided that she probably had Dyscalculia (sort of the math version of Dyslexia). I began developing strategies for the student to practice that I thought would help her overcome her disabilities. Within a two or three months, she went from failing her class to receiving A's and B's.
It has been a few years now since I finished tutoring her. A few months ago, I spoke with her parents again to see how she is doing now. They said their daughter is in college now, and doing extremely well. They said she often speaks about the techniques and strategies I taught her, and how much they are still helping her. She has never needed a tutor since she finished her lessons with me.
All of my students have shown improvement in their grades, regardless of their learning disabilities.
One example was an 8 year old with severe ADHD. I tried multiple strategies to help him get past his ADHD, and finally found one that worked well for him. After I began implementing this strategy for him, his progress dramatically accelerated and we started seeing very noticeable progression in his math skills and ability to remember his math facts.
The most recent example is a 10 year old boy who also had severe ADHD. He is exceedingly gifted with math, but he scored a 58% on reading comprehension. Within a month and a half of beginning tutoring with me, he was tested again, and scored an 88%! His teacher said it was the biggest leap of improvement she had ever witnessed in one of her students.
When I was in high school, I was a teacher's aid for a third grade class. I have worked at two summer camps, and have taught children from ages 5 to 17 about topics ranging from camping skills, swimming, nature, teamwork, and religion. I have 5 years of summer camp experience.
When I was in high school I took English 3 Honors and English 4 honors, as well as Chemistry and Physics, which were also honors classes. I was on my high school's academic bowl team all four years, receiving the awards of All-Conference Honorable Mention my Junior year, and All-Conference during my Senior year.
I achieved a high score of 27 on the ACT.
I want to be a tutor because I enjoy seeing the light come on in people's eyes as new understanding dawns on them. I have a passion for sharing my knowledge with people, and a knack for helping them to understand difficult concepts.
I've completed college algebra, and have excellent writing skills.
My biggest area of knowledge is the Bible and religion. A few years ago, I tutored someone who needed help with a 500 level religion course, and her professor was very impressed with her understanding afterward. She received an A in that class.
Aside from that, I have a very wide knowledge base. When describing my knowledge base, I like to say, "I know a lot about a lot of things, but I don't know everything about anything." I have a very analytical mind and have a talent for finding relationships between disparate things. As a result, I'm pretty good at coming up with analogies to help people understand when they're confused by difficult concepts. This is true for anything that I have an understanding of.
I spent 18 months as a missionary in the Philippines where I learned a lot of spiritual lessons and gained a great deal of cross cultural experience.
HobbiesI enjoy a lot of outdoor activities, and I'm an avid nature lover. I'm a very active person and enjoy caving, rock climbing, camping, etc... I also enjoy reading, writing, and music.
